The Trump Administration is a Direct Threat to Libertarian Activists; CLC Member Detained by Federal Agents

APRIL 14, 2026 — Today, the Classical Liberal Caucus was informed that one of our members was detained by federal Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at an airport after traveling abroad to a country considered unfriendly to the Trump administration. The member was detained for online statements that made no threat to any politician’s life but were distasteful to the administration. This member identifies as transgender.

Another member has confided in us that this administration has initiated removal proceedings against a close family member that was lawfully present under a court order. The President has near plenary power with regard to immigration visas, which leaves our member with no recourse.

Late last year, James Eaton (@james_konkin), another libertarian/anti-state activist, was detained by federal agents and charged for statements they made online. His case remains ongoing and can be tracked on CourtListener.

These are only the cases that we are aware of through our network, though we are certain that similar cases exist across the country. Libertarian activists continue to be targeted by the Trump administration. This dictatorship continues to chill political speech by using the authority of the state against our members and activist of other organizations. This troubling pattern will continue to emerge unless libertarians finally recognize this administration for what it is: a dictatorship.

There is no such thing as a good federal law enforcement agency, especially when they remain under control of Donald Trump. These organizations have been weaponized against opponents to the occupant of the White House. Still, there exist libertarians that gleefully remain supporters of Trump or that have yet to apologize for casting a vote for the warlord in office. These enablers have caused great pain to our movement, to the activists within it, and to Americans in-general. It is through tacit silence or, in some cases, conscious collaboration, that our party has failed us. As war, terror, and destruction ravage the Middle East by American forces, we must realize the mistakes of our past leadership.

We ask Libertarians to acknowledge the situation around them. It’s time we acknowledge the victims of this administration. Our demands must be clear and unmistakable:

Free James Eaton. Stop intimidation of anti-state activists. Remove Donald Trump from office.
